How do we become deficient?

Our bodies cannot function if we don’t eat the right foods. Most of our clients are deficient in some nutrients, may it be minerals, vitamins, fatty acids or enzymes. If you take supplements without looking at your dietary intake, your digestive problems may more than likely reoccur, so a combination of correcting gut health and feeding the body with adequate fuel and nutrition is key.

With BioKinesiology we test all your main digestive enzymes, which means if you are digesting and absorbing your food properly. You can have the perfect diet, but if your digestion does not work, all this gorgeous food will not be absorbed and available to your body. Our enzymes breaks down different types of food, we have several to break down our carbs, others are working on protein digestion, and a different set of enzymes is breaking down the fats you are eating. If your body is not producing these enzymes correctly, you may experience symptoms such as reflux, indigestion and bloating, pain or cramping, excess belching or wind, lower back pain, or IBS like symptoms. Leaky Gut Explained

The production of digestive enzymes can be hindered by toxic metals in the body, also by virus or post virus, parasites or bacterial and fungal imbalances. Removing those toxins will help in restoring enzyme function, and therefore your digestion and the absorption of nutrients from your food. Digestion begins in the mouth, as chewing and swallowing releases amylase in the saliva. This starts to break down carbohydrates like fruit and veg and grains. The actual mixing of food and beginning of protein digestion happen in the stomach. Our small intestine next down the line works on all food groups – fat digestion, the further breakdown of carbs and proteins, and ultimately the absorption of all nutrients into the bloodstream. Testing for your digestive enzymes tells us if you can absorb the nutrients coming from your food, and if your enzymes being low is connected to your health problems. Undigested protein can lead to parasitic infections and undigested carbs can breed fungal overgrowth. Both can prompt leaky gut.
This means that larger than normal spaces develop between the cells of the gut wall. Therefore toxins and small particles of food can leak out of the gut and into the bloodstream. Those pieces and pathogens are not meant to get into your blood at all, and they can cause widespread inflammation, or trigger a reaction from the immune system. This may give rise to allergies, intolerances, and autoimmune conditions.


Other common symptoms associated with leaky gut are:

  • fatigue
  • painful muscles
  • brain fog
  • breathlessness
  • poor exercise tolerance
  • anxiety and depression
  • ADHD and
  • candida infection, to name but a few.

These are essential macro-nutrients, and they must be obtained through diet as the body cannot produce them on its own. And that is where your work comes in. You must ensure that good nutrients are taken in with your diet, so there will be enough amino acids, fatty lipids and glucose available for all important processes in the body.

Proteins are the building blocks of the body. They make everything from bones, blood, skin, muscles, hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters. Having too little protein in your diet will result in poor quality hormones, unregulated blood sugar and poor digestion. We cannot stress this enough. Protein at every meal is essential. If you don’t eat meat you have to work a bit harder to get enough protein into your body. It is well worth knowing your vegetarian protein sources and make sure you have those covered throughout the day. Fat is needed for energy, absorption of vitamins, insulation, hormone production, and brain health. Good fats come from nuts, seeds, avocados, oily fish and some vegetable and nut oils. If using oil, it should be organic, cold pressed, in a dark bottle in the fridge, or it will oxidise and can be harmful to the body. Rancid fatty acids do more harm than good, this whole subject is a minefield and will be addressed in depth in one of the coming blog posts.

Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches and fibres found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products. Often vilified in trendy diets, carbohydrates – one of the basic food groups – are important to a healthy diet too.

We also need enough vitamins and minerals for ample body functioning. If a person is deprived of vitamins, they will develop a diseased state (think vitamin C and scurvy in those pirate days). Lacking minerals will on the other hand lead to deficiency symptoms (i.e. impaired immune function, poor hair and skin condition). We are all after the thick healthy hair from those ads. But no shampoo or conditioner can deliver this if your gut health is compromised and you cannot absorb the much needed minerals like zinc, silica or iron from your food.


Getting your digestive enzymes to work ensures absorption through the walls of the small intestine. We do this by identifying and removing toxins from your body. Sometimes a person also needs a particular strain of probiotics to bring gut bacteria back into balance. Also, there are nutrients to repair the gut walls if cell damage has occurred already. These steps are vital to overall health – skin, mood and mental health, hormonal balance, thyroid and adrenal function, and the activity of liver and gallbladder.   1. As always, great blog post. I developed anxiety disorder later in life. I have been doing pretty good lately but at my worst I have crushing chest pains associated with it. The closest thing to a cure is learning how to cope. Coriss
